Android 13 is the new version of Google’s operating system for phones and tablets, unveiled at Google I/O 2022, and it comes with some interesting new features, most notably Material You, language preferences, permissions and security.

Material You

Let’s start with Material You. It’s a new, improved version of the well-known Material Design, in which Google offers, besides customizable themes, other preset themes where the operating system creates a color combination based on the image the user has set as the device’s wallpaper. Media controls will look similar, but their color will depend on the colors of the album art that’s playing.

Languages

As for language, multilingual support is one of the new features in Android 13: it lets users use apps in different languages, regardless of which one is set as the device’s default. This is fully focused on each user’s specific needs.

Security and Permissions

Up to Android 12, users didn’t have full control over notifications. With Android 13, a new permission lets users decide whether or not to receive notifications from each app. They’ll also have stricter control over access to media files, since there are now 2 categories, “Photos and videos” and “Music and audio,” so apps don’t have to ask for access to the entire file library.

Google will also add a new “Security & privacy” option in Settings to help users report any security issue that may come up.

Big improvements are definitely coming with Android 13. Let’s wait for this new version and make the most of its new features.

The future of mobile

On the other hand, since smartphones arrived and their use grew, it’s hard to imagine our days without this tool, which changed our lives and guided us through the digital transformation.

Today, there are known to be more than 3 million apps on the Google Play Store (source), and that’s no surprise: apps have become hugely relevant in the short time they’ve existed, around 12 years, to the point where they’re now essential, offering possibilities so broad that nobody knows for sure how far they can go. Even so, it’s important to consider that there are factors that influence, and will keep influencing, the development of current and future mobile apps, for example:

  • 5G technology
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Virtual reality
  • Augmented reality
  • Blockchain technologies
  • Wearables
  • Machine learning
  • Internet of Things (IoT)

It’s also worth mentioning that the demand for apps keeps growing, especially considering the endless possibilities the world of technology offers; in the not-too-distant future, we might even be able to control a spaceship from the palm of our hand. Imagination and creativity are the only limits.
